Calella de Palafrugell
One of the most unique and beautiful places to drink a glass of white wine is in the small fishing village of Calella de Palafrugell, located in the Costa Brava, in Catalunya, Spain. January is the perfect month to do this; the sea urchins are ready to be picked and the chilly weather sits well with a Sauvignon Blanc, Castell Perelada. The best spot is a small restaurant called El Didal, which is located in the Plaça Port-Bo right in front of the cove that goes by the same name. One can sit outside to observe the local fishermen who arrive with their traditional boats (llauts) and unload the sea urchins (garoines) which are immediate cut open and then served. You either eat them with a piece of bread, or can request a small spoon. On a sunny, chilly day, the view, the sea urchins and a Sauvignon Blanc seem to offer a moment of eternal maritime bliss.

Nestled between Hollywood, Florida and Fort Lauderdale, one discovers a small town that hides a number of ancient lores. Mainly, if one is to visit the numerous antique shops that line the US1 road through town. I once discovered a Guayasamín in a gallery and a trombone that belonged to Tommy Dorsey. One of the best places to eat is Jaxson’s, an old fashioned ice cream parlour with one of the nation’s largest collections of rural American memorabilia. Try the hotdog! And if you want to splatter your shirt with butter and salt and dine on the dock, you cannot miss the Rustic Inn Crabhouse and its world famous garlic crabs. There is no better crab house in the State. For dessert, swing by Jimmy’s Chocolate and Cafe, you will be pleasantly surprised.
